First Presbyterian Church Celebrates its Sesquicentennial

Celebrating the Past – Looking to the Future

CHEYENNE – The First Presbyterian Church of Cheyenne is planning events, “Celebrating the Past – Looking to the Future,” as they reflect on 150 years of following Christ and serving the community. They are looking forward to the celebration weekend of May 17-19 as the church was founded on May 18, 1869, by Presbyterian Missionary, Rev. Sheldon Jackson.

A Friday evening social “Memory Lane Festivities” will take place on May 17 at 6 pm in the church parlor. The anniversary banquet will be on Saturday, May 18, at the Kiwanis Community House starting at 4 pm. For late reservations, call 631-0812.

A pancake breakfast will begin the day at 8 am on Sunday, May 19, in the church Fellowship Hall. Children’s Sunday School, which starts at 9 am, will feature a 150th birthday celebration.

The public is invited to join a tour of the stained-glass window collection on Sunday, May 19, at 8:30 am. The tour will begin in the church sanctuary.

The sesquicentennial worship service begins at 10 am Sunday, May 19, and will feature special music commissioned by a member of the church. Former pastors will have an important role in the worship service. A reception with anniversary cakes follows the worship service.

The church welcomes home former pastors, associate pastors, interim pastors, staff, and former members of the congregation with invitations to attend as many events as possible.

Sesquicentennial mementos are available to order, and a history book is being published to memorialize the 150 years of service.
