F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE – Members of the 90th OG on F.E. Warren Air Force Base traveled on March 5, 2019, to Norfolk, Va., to strengthen the working relationship with their Navy sister unit aboard the USS Wyoming (SSBN-742).

It has been a long standing tradition for the crew of the USS Wyoming to come to Cheyenne as part of Cheyenne Frontier Days, the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and western festival. In 2018, the 320th Missile Squadron within the 90th OG hosted their Navy brethren and took them on a tour of a missile alert facility to show them an Air Force leg of the nuclear triad.

In an effort to continue this partnership the submarine’s crew returned the favor.

“We took this opportunity to strengthen our relationship with our Navy sister unit,” said Lt. Col. George Chapman, 320th MS commander.

Opportunities like this visit and tour of the boat, according to Chapman, provide professional development opportunities for nuclear and missile operations officers.

As part of the tour of the submarine, the crew learned about the process of putting a vessel into ‘dry dock’ and what that entails.

“Dry dock is used for the construction, maintenance, and repair of watercraft,” said Chapman. “In January 2018, the USS Wyoming was brought in for the midlife refueling of the on-board nuclear reactor, technological upgrades, and to add quarters for enlisted female sailors.”

The 90th OG team also had the opportunity to see the Nimitz Class supercarriers, USS George H.W. Bush, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Virginia Class submarine, USS Washington.

The crew of the USS Wyoming and the 90th OG plan to continue and strengthen their partnership through more professional development opportunities and camaraderie events.
